Colloquium MODELIFE : Toby KIERS (Amsterdam)

Université Côte d'Azur

Internationally renouwned evolutionary biologist Toby KIERS focuses on how fungi and plants organize their symbiotic relationship, based on... the laws of markets ! We will get ready to learn about this symbiosis with two interactive lectures on (1) the fluid dynamics within fungal networks and (2) the fundamental laws that rule human markets. Come curious and ask questions ! Participation is free, but we need to know how many people will drink coffee and aperitif, so please register !

ABSTRACT: Toby KIERS. The arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis is characterized by complex underground networks of plants and fungi trading resources. While it has been shown that both fungal and plant individuals are able to preferentially allocate resources to higher quality partners, the trade dynamics governing these underground markets are unknown. My lab develops tools to visualize, track and quantify symbiotic trade over space and time. Our newest research tool utilizes high resolution imaging to track quantum-dot tagged nutrients across complex networks and into host roots. Ultimately, we are interested in predicting how and when biological markets are favoured to evolve.
