Monitoring and Modeling: Applying Smart Technology to Natural Risk Management

About the meeting

UCAJEDI Risks in the North-Mediterranean Zone” Core Program Meeting

Tuesday, March 19, 2019 (9:00 to 18:00) -

The Université Côte d’Azur organize the first half of 2019 at IMREDD, the core program UCAJEDI "Risks in the North-Mediterranean Zone" day's on Monitoring and Modeling natural hazards and risks, for private and public-sector shareholders. The objective of the workshop is to describe current strategies, define future needs, and identify potential areas of collaboration between public land managers, private companies, and research organizations. As well as to present a progress report on the program through presentations by UCAJEDI IDEX project sponsors (IDEX Office and Academies), presentation of posters, discussions and exchanges with the Think Tank.

The Euro-Mediterranean zone is exposed to a wide range of natural and anthropogenic risks: mass movements, earthquakes, forest fires, flooding, air and water pollution, soil erosion and a spectrum of invasive terrestrial and aquatic species. Changes in climate and land cover are transforming natural and human environments at unprecedented speed, and terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems are exposed to greater risks than ever.

Data pooling from different sensors is beginning to emerge as some data are progressively becoming centralized, whereas they were once fragmented at the local scale. We can expect that an emerging trend in the coming years will be the progressive centralization and sharing of sensor data for faster/broader access.

The overall objective of the UCA Natural and Anthropogenic Risks core program is to develop new approaches to hazard modeling in order to improve our ability to forecast and react to natural and anthropogenic hazards and risks. It integrates sensor design and characteristics, data transmission and storage, and post-event and real-time modeling based on high speed algorithms and computers. Risk modeling research carried out today is expected to provide practical solutions in tomorrow’s digital Big Data environment.
