Abstract: Metaheuristics and more specifically Evolutionary Algortihms (EA) are Artificial Intelligence algorithms introduced to mimic biological, physical, sociological, chemical... processes inspired from Nature in order to solve optimization problems. Many variants are proposed in the litterature as Genetic Algorithms, Differential Evolution, Particle Swarm Optimization, Ant Colony Optimization...They share a common framework that will be introduced. Their diversity allows to tackle many different kind of NP-hard problems such as multi or many-objective, multi-modal, large-scale or dynamic optimization...We will show why and how to use such algorithms. Finally, we will present some contributions in image retrieval, image processing, bioinformatics and conclude by presenting the current trends of research in Evolutionary Computation field.
